Chapter of THE MOLES!
THE MOLES! Creed
There is a destiny that makes us sisters, None goes her way alone; All that we send into the lives of others comes back into our own. Care not what our temples or our creeds, One thing holds firm and fast, That in our fateful heap of days and deeds, The soul of man is cast.
Founding of THE MOLES!
A group of four friends: Maxine Ferebee, Thelma Hill, Vivian Hucles, and Naomi Johnson gathered on Halloween 1928 for a night of fun in Norfolk, VA. These four enjoyed such a delightful night of fun and friendship that they decided to invite nine other friends to join them for a second evening of fun one week later. One week later the original four friends met at the home of Maxine Ferebee and were joined by Emily Sugar Alston, Kathryn Brown Bibbins, Marian Palmer Capps, Nellie Holmes Joyner, Aline Black Hicks, Roberta Moseley Lucas, Eva Tucker Moore, Elizabeth Turner Reid, and Maria Williamson Jackson. Each member of the group was young, engaged in the field of education and ready for fun and fellowship.
Afterwards, a unanimous decision was made to form a club and it was called The MOLES. The MOLES received its name based upon the ideals of the organization: Maturity, Optimism, Loyalty, Enthusiasm, and Sparkle. The Organization was chartered in Norfolk, Virginia in 1950 as THE MOLES.
Husbands and affiliating friends of The MOLES wanted to become affiliated with The MOLES. The Norfolk MOLES, wanting the husbands to be called by a special name, voted to substitute the letter “u” for the letter “o” in the word Moles to become the Mules.
