MOLE SCHOLARSHIPS

For several decades, the Washington, DC Chapter of THE MOLES has provided scholarships to area students. The original focus was to provide scholarships to DC graduates who planned to attend either DC Teachers College, Federal City, and later the University of the District of Columbia. Over the past plus decades, the focus was changed to entertain graduates from Washington, DC metropolitan area high schools who planned to attend a four-year college or university. The locale residency focus of scholarship applicants was changed to reflect the residency of chapter members that extended beyond the boundary of the District of Columbia to include Maryland and Virginia. The chapter scholarship awardee preference is given for attendance at a historically black college or university (HBCU) as, historically, the majority of the DC Chapter members were graduates of an HBCU. Starting in 2017, the number of scholarships awarded was increased from one to two. Scholarship recipients continue to receive the funding annually during the four years of articulation provided they maintain a specified minimum grade point average. The Scholarship Committee oversees the chapter’s program and makes recommendations to the National Scholarship Committee of students to be considered for the two national scholarships.

Currently, the chapter’s two scholarship recipients are rising seniors at their respective universities and they have consistently made the Dean’s List during their matriculation. Maya Sullivan starts her senior year in the fall of 2020 at Tuskegee University (Tuskegee, AL) where she is studying to become a veterinarian. In the fall of 2021, she plans to continue forward with attendance at one of the veterinary medical schools to which she has applied. Kamryn Richards starts her senior year at Towson University (Towson, MD) where she is majoring in psychology with a minor in business administration. Upon graduation, she plans to continue forward to graduate school in the fall of 2021.

Currently, the chapter’s two scholarship recipients are first-year college students who graduated with honors from their respective high schools.

Arija Martin graduated from Indian Creek High School of Crownsville, Maryland, and has been admitted to attend the University of Southern California in the spring semester of 2022. She plans to obtain her Bachelor's Degree in International Relations and work in the federal government or with a non-profit international organization to serve people and change the lives of those around the globe.

DeMya Campbell is a graduate of Dunbar High School and is currently attending Winston Salem State University, Winston Salem, NC. She plans to obtain her Ph.D. in Exercise Science in four years and go on to law school to become a sports attorney. She also plans to continue her love of community service by giving back.

We are so proud of our scholarship recipients and wish them much success as they embark upon their new and exciting journey!
